Honest answer: I didn't have a great one. So I went and built it.

Waco Striders Running Club
🟢 All levelsWaco's original running club and still the most active one. They meet Monday and Wednesday evenings plus Saturday mornings, mostly routing through Cameron Park. Distances range from 3 to 8 miles depending on the day.
What makes the Striders worth joining isn't the mileage — it's that people stay for 20 years. Annual membership is $20 per household, $10 for full-time students. That covers liability insurance and access to all group runs.

🟢 All pacesA newer group that runs Tuesday and Sunday evenings at 6:00 PM, meeting at 200 E Bridge St (the Elm Street run). All paces welcome. They also organize occasional special events — this month includes a Bubble Run on April 18 at Texas Motor Speedway. Follow them at @WacoRun for current schedules.

BikeSmith Waco — Saturday Morning Group Ride
WeeklyEvery Saturday at 8:00 AM, BikeSmith Waco heads out for a group ride to the Cameron Park trails. They start at the shop and ride to the trail together. A practical, no-fuss way to get on the trails with people who know them.

Waco Bicycle Club
🟢 Road & MTBThe WBC has been the backbone of cycling in Waco for years, and their ride calendar is more robust than most people realize.
Road rides: Tuesday evening Dam Rides leave from Waco Dam (3803 Skeet Eason Rd) at 5:45 PM, with A, B, C, and D pace groups covering 25 to 41 miles. Saturday mornings have three groups — drop, regroup, and no-drop. There's also a Sunday Social Ride at a relaxed 13–15 mph for anyone who just wants to spin with good company.
Mountain bike: Sunday rides leave from the Redwood Shelter in Cameron Park at 2:00 PM, all levels welcome. Tuesday and Thursday rides also meet at the Redwood Shelter at 1:00 PM, geared toward beginner to intermediate riders. Cameron Park has 20 miles of single track from green circle to double black diamond. Membership is required to receive the weekly ride emails.

Wild Wednesdays Hikes — Waco Parks & Recreation
🟢 FreeFree, no signup, every single week. Waco Parks and Recreation sends two park rangers into Cameron Park every Wednesday at 5:45 PM to lead a guided hike from the Redwood Shelter. Easy and moderate trail options. About an hour. Bring water and real shoes. That's it.

🟢 Free & MonthlyRun by Act Locally Waco, Waco Walks is a roughly monthly group walk that explores a different part of the city each time. Some are just for the scenery and the company. Others are educational, led by naturalists, historians, or local experts who teach you something about the place you're walking through.
Recent and upcoming walks include the Carleen Bright Arboretum with Heart of Texas Master Naturalists, a Black History Month walk, downtown church architecture, and the annual Tornado Remembrance Walk in May. Free, all ages, dogs usually welcome on a leash.

Waco Rowing Center
Youth & AdultMost people drive past Brazos Park East and have no idea what's happening on the water. The Brazos River has 17 miles of protected, flat water that rowing coaches from across the country consider world-class.
The Center's youth program has sent athletes to Penn, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, and more. Their adult Learn-to-Row program runs three practices over two weeks — no experience needed, no oars required.

MonthlyThe Waco Movie Club, run through the Heart of Texas Film Society, gathers monthly to watch a film and then actually discuss it — led by Baylor professor Greg Jurls. Not a passive watch party. A real conversation.
They meet at Segovia Wine Bar (300 S 6th St). May's pick is Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Thursday May 21 at 7:30 PM. Watch it ahead of time, then show up ready to defend your favorite color.
The same group runs the Waco Indie Film Festival every July — this year July 16–19 downtown with an online encore through July 25.

🟢 Beginner FriendlyMahjong has had a real moment in Waco over the last couple of years, and Sarah Nazarian is the person who lit the match. Her Mahjong 101 beginner lessons regularly sell out weeks in advance, and she runs a seasonal Waco Mahjong League at Jorge's Cantina (4225 Franklin Ave) for newer players who want to keep playing once they've learned the tiles.
